Staff Pick of the Week: ALIEN

CREW EXPENDABLE! ALIEN, Ridley Scott's stylistic masterpiece is our ethics pick of the week. I chose this film for the ethical underpinnings within. What's scarier than a giant dripping eyeless monster with acid for blood? Why, a corporation with no sense of human resources, of course! Science Fiction continues to illustrate ethical questions like no other genre. In ALIEN, a homeward bound crew on a mining ship is stopped midflight to investigate an alien life form on a desolate planet. When the beast comes aboard and the crew is steadily being captured and impregnated with its terrifying offspring, we come to find out that the Company doesn't care! It wants the alien specimen for itself! Only the android science officer knows the secret, and he'll kill you himself before he tells you! The ethics of ALIEN? The people in charge of the ship are mere pawns in a bigger game being played by a ruthless business organization on Earth. When you're in middle management, how best to handle your employees? Do you lie, do you blur the truth to keep them calm? Would you give your own life to save them? Would you lose your job for them? Other ethical questions: how far should artificial intelligence go? In many sci-fi situations, the computer or robot is designed to never betray the will of the creator. In BLADE RUNNER, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, we find that we would have been better off with good old human know-how. Is technology going to spin out of control? Join a crew of fine actors including Sigorney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Yaphet Kotto, and Ian Holm on this unforgettable experience.
